Community Guidelines
Effective date: 4 July 2026
Pothio works because readers look out for one another. These are the simple do's and don'ts that keep it kind, honest, and safe.
Please do
- List only books you actually own and are happy to give away.
- Describe each book and its condition honestly.
- Reply to requests promptly, and accept or decline kindly.
- Once you accept, pack the book with care and post it in good time — or hand it over promptly if you're meeting in person.
- Confirm receipt when a book arrives, so the circle stays fair.
- Be warm and respectful in chat — a quick, friendly message goes a long way.
- Treat every member with respect — we're all here for the love of reading.
Please don't
- Don't list pirated, counterfeit, stolen, or otherwise illegal material.
- Don't list books you don't own or can't give away.
- Don't misrepresent a book's condition or contents.
- Don't ask for money, sell anything, or try to use Pothio for commercial purposes — it's free and non-commercial.
- Don't harass, abuse, threaten, or spam other members, in chat or anywhere else.
- Don't misuse anyone's personal details. Use a delivery address only to post that one book, and never store or share it.
- Don't try to game Karma, create fake accounts, or otherwise abuse the system.
Meeting in person
If you swap face-to-face — handy when you're in the same society, campus, or office — meet in a safe, public place and use your judgement. Pothio doesn't verify users, so treat an in-person swap as you would meeting any new person. If something feels off, don't go through with it, and tell us.
In your group
If you're part of a society, campus, or workplace space, remember your group's managers are fellow members who volunteer their time. Be respectful of them and of everyone in the group.
Staying safe
Share only the details needed to complete a swap. Pothio shows a sender your full address only after they accept your request — keep it that way by not sharing personal contact details you don't need to. If a message or a swap feels wrong, you can report or block the other person, and you can always tell us.
If the guidelines are broken
Breaking these guidelines can lead to a friendly warning, removal of a listing or content, or — for serious or repeated issues — suspension or closure of an account. We use our judgement to keep Pothio safe for everyone. These guidelines work alongside our Terms of Use.
Report a problem
Seen something that breaks these guidelines? Let us know at Hello@pothio.com, or use the report option in a chat. Thank you for helping keep Pothio a good place to read and share.
